The key is to set it to the maximum frequency/bits per sample the soundcard supports, this makes HQP take over the signals quality control from the soundcard. It can make almost any DAC sound like a higher quality one. You can certainly give it a good try this way.
The best player full stop for sound quality is HQPlayer and you can use this for free if you are ok with the 30minute play limit before it auto closes. The best free player for sound quality I have used is Foobar2000.
The software volume control changes this. The AE-5s gain is controlled by the driver.
If it is boosting the signal outside of the normal volume control, it does so before the AE-5 receives it.
